The King’s Academy, Middlesbrough, Cleveland

Over 8000m2 of hardwearing carpet tiles from Tessera have been installed in a prestigious new build secondary school, The King’s Academy, in Middlesbrough, Cleveland.

Primera tufted loop pile, Ethos tip-sheared textured loop, and low level loop pile Apex carpet tiles were specified in contrasting, tonal colours throughout the Academy playing a discreet but important role in assisting orientation around the building.

Seven different bespoke shades of Primera heavy contract carpet tiles were created and inserted in diminishing diamond patterns at each of the seven stairwell access points, delineating the different areas with subtle colour-coding. The corridors and main walkways also feature Primera tiles in flecked Perseus blue and Venus red.

Over 4,500m2 of versatile Apex tiles were fitted in the teaching and resource areas in Marine, Pool and Mulberry, three different blue and purple heather shades. Finally, textured loop Ethos Blueberry tiles help to make the staffroom a comfortable and calming retreat.

The architect and interior designers were Howarth Litchfield Partnership of Durham. Neil Daley, Head of Interior Design at HLP said, “We chose Tessera because of their previous reliable track record in education. Their bespoke design service responded quickly to our requirement for a versatile colour palette, providing samples of the special shades they could create for us. The King’s Academy has delivered a quality normally associated with a headquarters building and has raised the standards of school design”.

The King’s Academy was a project built under a partnering agreement contract which has delivered for the client, The Vardy Foundation, a superb school, on time and to budget.
